2,453 shows make biggest Fringe ever
By Tim Cornwell
Published: 11/6/2010

The cover of the Fringe programme this year was drawn by artist Johanna Basford
THE Edinburgh Festival Fringe has announced a 17 per cent increase in the number of its shows, defying the economic downturn and looming funding cuts in the arts.

The programme of 2,453 shows for the world's biggest arts festival was unveiled yesterday, running to 330 pages, with its usual mix of high drama, low comedy, and cutting-edge work on impromptu stages from car parks to an Aga shop.

In what appears a Fringe first, the Traverse Theatre, which has generated a string of hit shows, said it will this year beam one of its productions live to cinemas around the country.

Meanwhile directors of the Famous Spiegeltent confirmed the popular venue will be back in George Square this year with a show, Smoke and Mirrors, which it is hoped could rival the venue's hit production La Clique.

Organisers said the Fringe's record ticket sales last year had boosted confidence, and helped convince performers, comedians and theatre companies that Edinburgh remains the flagship international performance showcase. Last year a record 1,859,235 tickets were sold – a 21 per cent increase on the previous year.

While the Fringe has typically doubled in size every decade of its existence, this year's increase was the biggest in recent times.

"I'm not surprised that it's up. I'm surprised that it's up by that much," said the Fringe chief executive Kath Mainland. "Last year was a very successful year; the profile was good, audiences were good, shows were critically acclaimed. That success breeding success will be part of it."

The number of shows has risen across the board.

The number of listed venues in the programme, however, has dropped slightly this year to 259, barely more than the 250 in 2007.

Existing venues have added new performance spaces, it is thought, while others – like the Ballroom at the Assembly Rooms, which was closed by damp problems last year – have been reopened.

Many of the Fringe's most anticipated shows, from glamour model Abi Titmuss in the rugby play Up'N'Under, to the National Theatre of Scotland's new boxing show, Beautiful Burnout, have already been publicised.

But some themes emerged with the release of the entire programme yesterday. Site specific and moving "promenade" shows are back in strength. One, The Invisible Dot Club, is offering a mix of stand-up and sketches at "a secret location by the sea".

Sports and the World Cup get picked up in shows like All over a Football at the Underbelly venue. Female sexuality is explored in shows such as Lesbian Bathhouse or Your Little Princess is My Little Whore. The sex trade also provides material for the comedy show Sex Traffic – How Much is That Woman in the Window?

There's an Obama musical, Obamamia. Unsurprisingly, there is a lack of shows aimed at the new UK Government, although it is sure to feature strongly in stand-up acts.

In a new-look programme, all shows, not just those for children, were for the first time asked to put an age rating on their productions, from U for Universal to PG for Parental Guidance, or flagged up by age.

A string of late-night and comedy shows carry an 18+ recommendation, although Fringe staff yesterday stressed it was a guide, not a rule.

One show, Gemma Goggin: Get Laid or Die Trying was rated 16+, while another, Granny's Gone Wild, came in at 18+, as did Swedish comedian Magnus Betner.

One Fringe insider welcomed the move yesterday, saying: "Parents can be quite vigorous in their complaints."

The Fringe has been considering whether to put its tickets on sale earlier next year, as some venues have done this year with high-profile shows.

Ms Mainland said: "Until this point we haven't been able to do anything earlier. If that's a trend, if that's what companies and venues want to do, that's something we have to respond to."

LET US WHET YOUR APPETITE …

• Beautiful Burnout. Set in a Glasgow boxing ring, complete with "soul-sapping" bouts, in the new Pleasance Forth venue, this new National Theatre of Scotland show will be one to watch.

• The Famous Spiegeltent is back in George Square this year after being much missed last year. The headline show is Smoke and Mirrors, billed as a "fantasy cabaret" with acrobatics, aerial work, a magician, tap dancer, live band and emerging star Iota.

A second space, Deluxe, will host children's shows and a free lounge bar but the aim is to make the square a "more civilised place" with fewer people, earlier hours, and the focus on entertainment rather than a teaming beer garden.

• The Penny Dreadfuls return with a brand new comedy sketch show in the Pleasance Courtyard. Fans will be anticipating another crop of five-star reviews.

• COMEDY: There are about 850 comedy shows across the Fringe including some 356 in the Edinburgh Comedy Festival.

Aaaaaaaargh!, the Malcolm Hardee tribute documentary, takes the traditional first place in the comedy programme.

Look out for the likes of Nina Conti, stand-up and ventriloquist, in a new Edinburgh show, along with the likes of Josie Long, Arthur Smith, Barry Cryer, the Cambridge Footlights, and Emo Phillips, returning after a too-long absence.

• THE EDGE: The rock music strand of the Fringe is topped by Dizzee Rascal, but other names announced yesterday include Tinchy Stryder, Professor Green, Eels, Modest Mouse and Hallo Gallo 2010 (Michael Rother and friends performing the music of Neu!)

THE TRAVERSE THEATRE: The venue has an impressive track record of must-see drama and this year looks set to be no exception.

Likely highlights include While You Lie, a new play by Sam Holcroft, Roadkill, in which the audience is ferried by bus to another location for a show probing the sex-traffic trade, and the return of the Grid Iron theatre company's Decky Does a Bronco.

• en route. In this promenade show, hosted by the Traverse Theatre, a tiny "audience" are guided round a mystery street tour by iPod and mobile phone.

• DANCE: Flawless – Chase the Dream. The stars of Britain's Got Talent 2009 come to the Underbelly to make their Edinburgh debut.

• Festival in the Sky. Diners are given the chance to eat at a 22-seat table hoisted 100ft above the city by a huge crane.

Queen honours Scots at ceremony

The Queen at Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh at the Ceremony of the Key
The Queen has honoured dozens of Scots at an investiture ceremony in the Scottish capital.

A total of 84 awards, including knighthoods, CBEs, OBEs, and MBEs, were given out at service in the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

The event formed part of the Queen's week of summer engagements in Scotland, which got underway on Monday.

Recipients included an artist, tourism chief and a leading member of the Jewish community.

One of the first to be honoured was whisky firm boss Ian Good, who received a knighthood for services to industry.

The ceremony was very intimate and because it was in Scotland I knew quite a number of people who were also being honoured

Sir Ian Good

And he confessed to having a few nerves before his appointment with the Queen.

Sir Ian said: "I'm used to speaking in front of a number of people but I was more nervous today than if I had been speaking to 200 people."

He added: "The ceremony was very intimate and because it was in Scotland I knew quite a number of people who were also being honoured. But it was also very moving."

Sir Ian is the head of The Edrington drinks group and former chairman of the Scotch Whisky Association.

The Edrington group, whose brands include The Macallan and Famous Grouse, is Scotland's biggest private company and exports some five million cases a year.

He said that the company's shareholders were a charitable trust. The dividend that went to that trust allowed it to donate £8.4m to charities in Scotland last year.

Sir Ian said: "It's a tremendous honour to chair the trust and business and be able to give such a large sum for the benefit of Scotland. That's very important to me."

Garden party

Artist Alison Watt, a major figure in the world of Scottish contemporary art, received an OBE.

The same honour was given to Philip Riddle, the chief executive of VisitScotland, in recognition of his work for the tourism industry.

Annie Inglis, a former drama lecturer who has been involved in amateur dramatics in the north east of Scotland for some 50 years, was presented with an MBE.

Ephraim Borowski, a leading member of Scotland's Jewish community, also received the same honour.

Professor Timothy O'Shea, the principal and vice chancellor of Edinburgh University, was knighted for services to higher education.

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh then hosted a garden party at the palace.

About 8,000 people from all walks of life were invited for tea and cake at the gathering.

The tradition dates back to the time of King George V and Queen Mary, who hosted the first garden party at Holyroodhouse.

Queen given flowers at Royal Week opening ceremony
Published: 13/07/2010

Queen given flowers at Royal Week opening ceremonyThe launch of Royal Week kicked off yesterday (July 12th) with a ceremony in which the Queen was presented with a bouquet of flowers.

Royal Week represents the annual tradition of the monarch visiting Edinburgh and staying at the Palace of Holyrood House, which is her official residence in Scotland when she visits this part of the UK and stands at the end of the Royal Mile.

Yesterday's Ceremony of the Keys saw the Queen being greeted on the forecourt of the residence by George Grubb, Lord Provost for Edinburgh.

A symbolic act where the Queen was given the keys to the city before she handed them back as a gesture of trust that Edinburgh's elected officials will keep them safe then took place.

She stated: "I return these keys, being perfectly convinced that they cannot be placed in better hands than those of the Lord Provost and councillors of my good city of Edinburgh."

The monarch was then presented with flowers, including a posy from six-year-old Eliza Bruce-Jones, who said: "I thought it was nice for the Queen."

The Queen will undertake a series of engagements in Edinburgh as part of Royal Week before returning to London.

By DUNCAN MACMILLAN
SPECTATORS - PETER THOMSON, HEATHER NEVAY AND HELEN FLOCKHART ****

OPEN EYE GALLERY, EDINBURGH
SURREALISM was like a certain well-known beer: an art movement that reached the parts other art movements did not reach. It opened up the world of dreams, of hidden motivations and unspoken desires.

So, given the national character, Scottish Surr
Nevertheless, several major Scottish artists have taken their inspiration from Surrealism. Eduardo Paolozzi really was a Surrealist, and for Steven Campbell the surrealist approach to dream and to narratives of the unexpected was central to the way he worked.

Campbell's painting is a good starting point in approaching the work of Peter Thomson, Helen Flockhart and Heather Nevay, showing together at the Open Eye. Thomson and Flockhart were his near contemporaries at Glasgow School of Art and Nevay followed shortly afterwards.

The work of all three is, like his, figurative, dreamlike and it is also ultimately shaped by Surrealism. The three painters share a characteristic that distinguishes them from Campbell, however. They all paint on a fairly small scale and to a high degree of finish and while their work does seem to be improvised - Flockhart for instance talks of how her pictures start from something that is almost abstract - its appearance in each case nevertheless seems tightly controlled. This is especially true of Nevay, whose work is very small and has a bright, jewel-like surface. The effect is to make the strange things that happen in her pictures, populated by sinisterly knowing child-adults, seem even stranger.

For Flockhart, surface and finish are also a vital part of the image. She speaks of the people she paints as trapped by the patterns that enfold them and that is the feeling we get looking at pictures like The Ochre Eye Dress.

Thomson paints on a slightly bigger scale than the other two and his work is less immediately uncanny than either of them. However, he can make an apparently simple view of a library seem very spooky and odd. Indeed, the work of all three painters makes us feel slightly uneasy. It is, though, very intriguing.

Хорошая статья.

Dada and Surrealism
The Dada Surrealist Movement is now part of art history more in spite of, than because of, its initial aims. Dada began as an anti-art movement or, at least, a movement against the way art was appreciated by what considered itself the civilized world; Surrealism was much more than an art movement and it thrust home Dada's subversive attack on rational and 'civilized' standards. Whether people are aware of it or not, the Dada and Surrealist revolt has helped to change modern consciousness.
Dada had no formal aesthetic, virtually disregarding easel painting, but the Dadaists shared a nihilistic ethic. The word 'Dada', ambiguously denoting both 'hobby horse' and 'father', was arrived at by chance and gained immediate acceptance by its suitably childish and nonsensical ring. An international movement originating in Zurich and New York at the height of the First World War, it quickly spread to Berlin, Cologne, Hanover, Paris and, to some extent, Russia.

This revolt was against the senseless barbarities of war. It pinpointed the hypocrisy of those who felt that art created spiritual values. Civilization - despite Christianity, despite museums - had indeed broken down when thousands of grown men shelled each other day after day, from muddy trenches. It was no use for the person 'of sensibility', one of Dada's early targets, to take refuge in beauty.

The first step was to make negative gestures; to attack the icons of the old culture. It was in this iconoclastic spirit that in 1917 Marcel Duchamp put a moustache and beard in black crayon on a colored reproduction of Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa (c 1502).

'The Dadaist, said the German poet Richard Huelsenbeck (1892-1974),'is a man of reality who loves wine, women and advertising.' The Berlin Dadaists, such as Raoul Hausmann (1886-1971), particularly liked the technique of photomontage, using illustrations and advertisements cut out of popular magazines. The Dadaists adapted the Cubist idea of collage to new purpose, that of making puzzling or strikingly incongruous juxtapositions of images and letters. The collages of Kurt Schwitters (1887-1948) in Hanover were subversive because they were made of litter - bus tickets, sweet wrappings and other scraps. Duchamp's 'ready mades' likewise tended to start life as objects of unmitigated ordinariness: the snow shovel, urinal and hat rack.

Other significant artists connected with the Dada Movement are Man Ray (1890-1976), whose basic tool was the camera and who invented the rayograph (an object placed on photographic paper was briefly exposed), Francis Picabia (1878-1953), an eclectic artist; Jean Arp (1887-1966), a poet and a sculptor, and Max Ernst (1891-1976) a collagist who was to become one of the great Surrealist painters.

Writers and poets, such as Hugo Ball (1886-1927) and Tristan Tzara (1896-1963), were at least as prominent as the artists. Dada gave much to the Surrealist Movement and was finally absorbed by it in Paris in the mid-1920s.

Surrealism probably had more influence on twentieth century art than any other movement except Cubism. It began as a literary movement, involving a special philosophy and lifestyle for its members and has been compared to religion in its aim and practices. It lost no opportunity to attack the Pope as a symbol of the restrictive authority of the established order, and it replaced him with one of its own, the poet Andre Breton (1896-1966) who was capable of 'excommunicating' those he thought misguided or recalcitrant: Salvador Dali was expelled in 1937. Breton developed a political program for the improvement of society but in practice, because politics invariably involve compromise, this proved incompatible with the major Surrealist aim of exploring and liberating the creative powers of the unconscious mind.

In 1924 Breton published his first Manifeste du surréalisme defining the movement 'once and for all' as he put it: 'SURREALISM, noun, masc. Pure psychic automatism by which it is intended to express either verbally or in writing, the true function of thought. Thought dictated in the absence of all control exerted by reason, and outside all aesthetic or more preoccupations. ENCYCL. Philos. Surrealism is based on the belief in the superior reality of certain forms of associations heretofore neglected, in the omnipotence of the dream and in the disinterested play of thought. It leads to the permanent destruction of all other psychic mechanisms and to the substitution for them in the solution of the principal problems of life.'
